The Hibernian Summer 7s is Back

Saturday, June 13th

The Hibernian Summer Sevens is back after nine year hibernation after a lot of work and planning by Larry LaMaina.  This year’s edition featured 16 men’s teams divided into two eight team divisions (Premier and Club).  The site was the same as previous year’s events the Neshaminy Junior High School which offered three well maintained pitches.

The premier division featured several of the areas top men’s clubs, testing their metal in this pre-qualifying warm up to the sevens season.  Due to the size and structure of the tournament all the sides were able to play four matches.  Each team played three matches in round robin play, which decided their seedings in the single elimination play that followed.  All of the teams advanced into either the winners or losers brackets of their respective divisions.

Club Division: The Misfits won the division by putting away the Hibernian I side in a lope side match 30-0.  To reach the finals the Misfits had to defeat Blackthorn in a back and forth match by a score of 35–21.  The Hibernian I side reached the finals by trouncing Chuckle’s Army by a score of 30 -5.

Club Consolations: The Hibernian II side bested Princeton II side by a score of 21-10.  The Hibernian II side reached the finals by outlasting Shippensburg Alums 21-0, while Princeton II received a forfeit from the Lehigh Valley squad 5-0.

Premier Division: Wilmington out slugged Schukyll River in a rain soaked match by a very close score 12-10.  Wilmington reached the finals by out pacing Princeton I with a score of 27-10, Schukyll River on the other hand had a slightly tougher route to the finals by having to out duel the very talented Long Island I side 19-10.

Premier Consolations:  The Grizzles (aka. Penn State Berks) captured the consolation finals in a close one against Schukyll River II by a score of 12-7.  The Grizzles reached the finals by taking down Long Island II by a score of 22-5 and Schukyll River II got there by handling Doylestown with a score of 40-7.

Tournament Director, Chris Castner, would like to thank the Steamroller Rugby Supply for support of the tournament and the Eastern Penn Rugby Referee Society for their stellar job officiating the matches.  If you are interested in attend next years event please contact Larry LaMaina at larry0310@aol.com or call 610-580-5817
